Don`t really know what it is - maybe part of the original Airbox restriction?
Anyway: took it off some time ago (you know, weight saving and stuff)by taking out the Airbox inlet. Just open it by removing 3 screws and that`s it

If you cut along the welds on the frame then you should be able to get at it.

Make sure you use a sharp hack saw and plenty of vaseline for your hand blisters

Don't take any notice of them John, but Stefan is correct on the removing.
The pipe is there to shut down the airbox sound.
Removing it aids the airflow a little

I don't know what it is but it looks like it could be where the fuel vapor recovery system plugs in to the airbox on US spec models.

But you can replace the restrictive "snorkel" with one off a 2000 mille...he says it's worth a few HP.

Thanks for the info chaps, will resist the temptation to get the grinder out instead will do it the proper way and us a hammer and chisel like all good tradesmen.
