Hard to believe that ARS is approaching it's first anniversary isn't it!

Renegade have gracefully agree to sponsor this site for a second year (but don't let that stop any additional sponsors coming foreward!) which is good news indeed.

As the hosting licencing expires as the same time, we will take the opportunity to move this service to a faster, more reliable web host and also change the software to something a little more cutting edge.

If you fancy checking out how ARS may look for year two, and therefore feedback to use 'before the event' as it were, check out the 'other RiderSites' from the drop-down box on the menu bar.

It will also give you an opportunity to familiarise yourselves with the new breed of forum software!

I knew having the nice chat with yourself and Jorge last sat might help! I'm sure it was nothing to do with me really but one can at least try!

Look foward to seeing the new software ASAP!

I take it the all our logins will remain intact when we proceed to the new setup?

We'd set up all the accounts for everyone of course. Unfortunately the messages can't be migrated, so we'd lose them all.

Look on it as a mega 'Spring Clean' and an excuse to post loads more!

The new software is much better and much faster. the only downside is you cant post pics from your hard disk but not a major problem.

Uh, won't that sort of lose all the really useful information from the last year??? No pics showing why shocks dont fit and all that good stuff?

Hmm, is this a good idea?

Hail BenW!

It would be a major pity to lose all that info ....and all of those fantastic arguments

Whats wrong with the current setup?

By Benw on Thursday, October 17, 2002 - 01:01 am:  View Benw's Profile Search for other posts by Benw Edit this post

This has got to be just about the best site for technical feedback on the entire web - we can't just lose all that info!

Is there some way that this knowledge can be moved to the new forums?

Hammy you got away with it on the other forums but we are the ARS and we have the POWER
All for one one for all, I would say

Would a hard disk copy not do the trick?

Ben use the MCN power to blackmail Hammy

Hear hear Ben and Crmc!

So this means it's back to getting your pics saved in some photo album site that keeps dissapearing all the time?
And all the derailing we're famous for, gone?
You call that cutting edge?

This sounds totally NUTS to me. All this stuff on this site must surely be stored as data - so whats the problem to move it to a new site. If this is progress then I'm out of here.

Oh dear. Looks like the move is going to be as popular as a cat in a bird cage.
Needs more planning, me thinks.
Good luck...
Andy.

Nice to see you're so dedicated to the cause!

Okay, why new software?

The short answer is, it's way better than this software, in almost every respect - but particulary in performance. The only (major) downside to switching software it losing important past messages, but there are ways around that.

Who fancies volunteering to manually copy and paste 'important' threads from the old software to the new software?

I will put CRMC33 forwards for that! He's got so much time spare, he spends most of it searching the web for all sorts of rubbish!

Go for it CRMC!

oops there I go again!

By Webhamster on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 03:55 am:  View Webhamster's Profile Search for other posts by Webhamster Edit this post

I'll second that!

Seriously though, the intention is to set up the 'new' software before it's actually required. This would give us a chance to fine-tune it and get anything important copied over.

What's needed are volunteers to help move that stuff over, and decide what's 'important' and what isn't ...

Sounds like just the job for that New Boy to me!
We can't have him playing Dirty Boy all the time and his employer won't notice anyway.

Surely the info on this site could be backed up and put on the new one.
Seems such a waste to lose it all.
And just like to say Great Site.

Oi - I'm busy with loads of other techie stuff... my brain hurts & my head is spinning: leave it out, Bef, there's a good chap!

Oh, and FWIW I still prefer this style of interface to the new one as used by the 'parent' site but basically, I'll work with whatever's available 'cos I'm adaptable like that, you see: I don't let problems get in my way, I just ride AROUND them!

No worries guys, as the sponsor, I summoned Hammy to my office and he has agreed to remonstrate the migration strategy. It simply means that Crm33 is not off the hook.

Sheep?

Hammy, I'd volunteer, but my knowledge of computers & software is pretty frightening. And I don't mean in a positive way.

We have a plan.

We will implement the new forum software, but we will also host the forum software (as read only) wilst our cunning volunteers migrate the important content into the new software.

New software will be up soon, will let you know when you can take a peak.
