Falco pilots,
Our pumped up bureaucratic state ministers have apparently agreed to
re-introduce front number plates for motorcycles in Australia.
Question 1: does anyone else have front number plates?
Question 2(a): how will I mount it on my Falco?
Question 2(b): fearing the obvious, will I be able to bring myself to drill
holes in my front guard?
[The whinge gets worse...]
In Australia we stopped having front plates 50 years ago as they were sharp
& therefore dangerous to the rider and pedestrians. However this now enables
bikes to evade head-on detection by speed cameras.
Some people have taken advantage of this going through head-on speed cameras
at huge speeds. In one case in particular the rider had their knee down at
close 200kmh in the suburbs. With sparks flying off their slider it was a
good shot and made front page news, hence the sensitivity now.
Our statistics indicate that the level of missed camera identifications for
bikes is only barely above that for cars, and cars of course have front and
rear number plates.. Bikes had 0.3% more missed identifications than cars,
and if the difference is put down to no front numberplates, in the
particular state it translated into 317 incidents in a year. It will cost
millions for bikes to comply..
Beware, the do-gooders could get to you too.
Cheers
Stephen
