A couple of new devices have popped up on roads near me in North Wales. They are boxes about 400 mm square mounted on stalks 600 mm high, grey in colour and next to sensors laid into the tarmac.
Does anyone know what they are? One is in a 30 mph limit and the other is just outside.
Thanks
Fra.

They are speed measuring devices but they require the police to connect a camera (on a temporary basis) for them to record who is speeding, the stalk at the side of the road contains the connecters. The advantage to the police is that they cannot be detected by radar or laser detectors. The disadvantage is that they are fixed locations and can therefore be recorded in things like the Geodesy GPS location recording device. They have also appeared in the West Midlands and Warwickshire (Anyone going to Bassets Pole or the Waterman using the A452 North of Balsall Common and south of the A45 or the A4177 as you pass through Meer End should take care).

You can tell them from traffic counters cos they have 3 cables rather than 2. And a van parked alongside.

We had a few in Suffolk but funny thing, the council came along and showing commendable initiative in the roads department, tarmaced over the lot.

Rich,

These new devices are embedded in the road surface. They also paint a couple of white dashes on the road near the sensors.
